When you start on as big of a project as paving you want to make sure that it is going to last. There are three major things that cause asphalt pavements to fail.
The first reason is improper thickness of asphalt. Sometimes cheap asphalt contractors who are trying to bid for your business will quote you a lower cost, but often what is happening is that they are budgeting for less asphalt. This could be dangerous for you because less asphalt means that the pavement is not as strong as it needs to be to bare the load of the cars riding on it. Different paving projects will need differing amounts of asphalt laid, depending on the weight it is expected to carry. For example, a parking lot for a busy retail location is going to need a lot more than a driveway that only has 2 cars that use it. You want to make sure you are using a trustworthy paving contractor who will ensure that the asphalt is thick enough to handle the weight it is expected to carry.
The second reason asphalt pavement fails is due to shifts in the subgrade. The subgrade is the native soil that is under the asphalt. A good contractor will make sure that the area underneath the asphalt has a good subgrade and a good subbase. Occasionally there will be shifts in the subgrade due to moisture, heavier than expected traffic load, roots growing deeper moving the soil around and other circumstances. A good subcontractor knows how to mitigate that from happening and ensure that you have a strong enough subgrade and subbase to carry the weight necessary.
The last reason asphalt pavements tend to fail is due to lack of maintenance. It is important to maintain your asphalt pavement to protect it from external elements that might try to damage the asphalt pavement. If you notice any cracks starting to appear, it is important to get them sealed right away. The longer that cracks remain open, the more water can get into the cracks which will cause long term damage to the asphalt pavement.
